What is ‘Keratin’ anyway?
Simply saying, the layer of cells covering the surface of the skin, where keratin is accumulated, is called the 'stratum corneum,' which protects the dermis layer where new skin cells are born and maintains the skin's moisture. It plays an important role in maintaining beautiful skin.
Removing keratin disrupts its original function, which is to protect against external intruders such as bacteria and foreign substances.
Skin cell turnover is the process of producing new skin cells to replace existing skin cells. It's a vital aspect of keeping your skin smooth and healthy. In young adults, the skin cell turnover cycle takes around 28 days, but the rate naturally slows as we age.
As shown in the diagram, keratin is a dead cell, so peeling it off is painless. It is just like cutting a nail. However, this point is very important.
How can exfoliation be Guilty as Sin ?
We will now use an analogy to illustrate this.

Think of the whole skin as a biker. Bikers protect their bodies from the risk of injury by wearing leather jackets and helmets.
That leather jacket is usually made of dead animal skin. (I'm an eco-leather person though...)
Also, helmets are also made of resin, and neither material has a life form.

Therefore, if they tear or break, it is not a problem, but rather they protect our skin and body and fulfil their original role of ‘protection against external dangers’.
The keratine layer of the skin, like the nails and hair, is a collection of dead cells, and so it performs the same function as the leather jacket mentioned in the previous analogy, i.e. it ‘protects the skin from external stimuli’.
Conversely, the act of exfoliating the stratum corneum is the same as riding a motorbike unprotected and naked like Venus in the famous painting, and is a very unprotected act.
Artificially exfoliating the skin is unnecessary and, in fact, can compromise the natural barrier function of the skin, as evident from this logic.
Chemical peels for removing acne scars, craters, or blemishes are entirely different from over-the-counter skincare products.

Please refrain from attempting chemical peels on your own without medical supervision (such as using hydroquinone or benzoyl peroxide)."
Skin care is usually a good practice, but within it, there are myths like skincare methods, strictly speaking, myths created for money as marketing exist, and unfortunately, some of these myths are sometimes perceived by people as common sense in skincare.
So, I hope you remember to understand this correct logic based on physiology well, just like protecting the health of your own skin, like a biker's leather jacket or helmet.
